Voting Question: What kind of Alto Sax (Buescher)? Pitched in a strange key?

27 August 2008, 4:30 pm

I just purchased an alto saxophone. I was told it was, and it looks to be, a Buescher manufactured in or by Elkhart. However I'd like to get a bit more information on it. I'm not much a sax player (I have previous experience on tenor), but this doesn't seem to be an Eb alto: when I finger a C, that is, when I depress only the middle finger of my upper hand it should sound an Eb in concert C. I checked it against my tuner and a fingered C sounds a D; I've never heard of this. Additionally the sax is finicky, the low notes are extremely difficult to get and tend to just jump up to the upper octave. I've played a tenor before and had no difficulty in any range; I can produce quality low notes. What's with my sax? It doesn't look like any other I've seen on the internet and the serials don't match anything I've seen (68386 with a 20A below). Please help.... read more
